Seller Description

This 2001 BMW M Coupe is one of nine S54-powered examples reportedly finished in Black Sapphire Metallic with a sunroof over two-tone Dark Gray and Black Nappa leather and is a great driver's grade example with excellent documentation.  The car was delivered new in New Jersey and was purchased by the original lessee at lease end. The second owner kept the car until 2012, and the current owner acquired it via Bring a Trailer in 2019. Power comes from a 3.2-liter S54 inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a factory limited-slip differential. Modifications include a Dinan Stage 1 tune, a Supersprint exhaust system, H&R sport springs, and an E46 M3 ZHP steering wheel. Now showing 89,630 miles, this S54 M Coupe is offered with the original window sticker, factory literature, service records through current ownership, two sets of master keys and fobs, a valet key, the original steering wheel, the original toolkit, OEM plush carpet floor mats, a clean Carfax report, and a clean California title.

The M Coupe was developed by a small group of BMW M engineers largely outside official channels, pairing the Z3 roadster platform with a fixed hatchback roof that substantially increased torsional rigidity. The 2001 and 2002 model years received the S54 engine from the E46 M3, and just 678 S54-powered examples were built for the US market.

The factory 17" Style 40 wheels were refinished in Chrome Shadow under prior ownership. H&R sport springs lower the car approximately 1.3" front and rear, and a Supersprint exhaust system exits through dual twin-tip outlets. Braking is handled by four-wheel ventilated discs with ABS.

The cabin is upholstered in two-tone Dark Gray and Black Nappa leather across the heated power sport seats, door panels, and center console, with matching plastics and carpets. Equipment includes cruise control, air conditioning, power windows and locks, an alarm, and a sunroof. A Bluetooth-capable aftermarket head unit was installed by a prior owner, and a conventional rearview mirror from an earlier BMW replaced the factory auto-dimming unit. An E46 M3 ZHP steering wheel is fitted, and the original M steering wheel is included with the sale. OEM plush carpet floor mats are fitted.

Factory instrumentation includes a 170-mph speedometer, a 9k-rpm tachometer, and fuel and temperature gauges in the main cluster, with oil temperature, a clock, and a voltmeter housed in the center stack. The digital odometer shows 89,630 miles, approximately 12,600 of which have been added by the current owner.

The 3.2-liter S54 inline-six features six individual throttle bodies and double-VANOS variable valve timing and was factory rated at 315 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. The ECU carries a Dinan Stage 1 tune that raises the redline from 7,600 to 8,000 rpm. Power reaches the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The cooling system was refreshed at approximately 65k miles, and service under prior ownership was performed by Carl Nelson at La Jolla Independent and by All German in Escondido.

The window sticker shows the original colors and delivery dealer along with the $46,135 retail price. Records are organized in a three-ring binder. Two sets of master keys with fobs, a valet key, the original steering wheel, and the original toolkit accompany the sale.

The Carfax report shows registration in New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, and California with no accidents or other issues reported. Per the seller, the car has had four owners.

We last saw this coupe for sale back in 2019. It's been driven 12.5k miles since then and still looks nice. It has black painted roadstar wheels, SuperSprint exhaust, H&R springs. , and aftermarket audio. The price seems very fair these days.
