Seller Description

This 1999 BMW M Coupe is finished in cosmos black over dark beige (1 of 79) and has been driven 110,600 miles. I've personally added about 5k of those miles in the 3 years I've owned it. In those 3 years, I've replaced, repaired, and/or upgraded nearly every part of this coupe. This is my 18th M Coupe Buyers Guide Project Coupe, and I believe this one has been the longest owned and had the most mileage added. I've enjoyed those miles a lot and have done road trips, family drives, and been able to visit the Tail of the Dragon, BMW Zentrum Museum, and Schuh Syndikat.

Until my purchase in 2023, this coupe spent it's whole life in Slidell and Metairie, Louisiana. Ownership history includes a Tulane professor who added most of the miles, and later the owner of the shop that maintained it for him. When I picked it up from that shop, I immediately headed east to Charlotte, NC to join 50+ coupes or Schuh Syndikat 2023. Afterwards we drove Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee then drove it all the way home to Colorado. It has spent the rest of its time garaged at my house in Colorado. On our way home from Schuh Syndikat, we had an unfortunate run-in with a coyote after midnight in western Kansas. It damaged the driver side of the front bumper and some of the trim panels behind it (last photo below). Luckily I had a cosmos black bumper in my attic and was able to source the rest of the required parts.

I usually treat the Project Coupes as I would if I were planning to keep them for myself. Therefore I upgrade them how I like them. Modifications to this include:

  • Bilstein Sport Suspension with H&R Lowering Springs
  • AKG Rear Subframe Bushings (85A street)
  • Rogue Engineering Rear Shock Mounts
  • Rogue Engineering Stainless Steel Clutch Line
  • AKG Rear Sway Bar Mount Reinforcements
  • AKG Brass Clutch Pedal Bushings
  • BMW ZHP Shift Knob

I drove it several thousand miles in the first week I owned it, but it still needed lots of mechanical maintenance as well. Items addressed include:

  • Shift Pin Service (fixes sticky 5th gear)
  • Replaced Oil Pan Gasket
  • Replaced Water Pump (radiator, hoses, and thermostat were previously replaced)
  • Replaced Auxiliary Fan
  • Reinforced Rear Sway Bar Mounts
  • Replaced Front Control Arm Bushings, Rear Subframe Bushings, and Engine Mounts
  • Replaced Clutch Pedal Bushings
  • Fixed Exhaust Mount
  • Fixed Hand Brake

On the inside:

  • Replaced Battery Cover
  • Replaced AC Button with correct one
  • Replaced Gauge and HVAC Bulbs
  • Fixed Passenger Door Handle
  • Fixed OBD2 Port Mount
  • Fixed Airbag Light
  • Fixed Sagging Glovebox
  • Refinished Seat Leather
  • Removed all panels and reinstalled with correct hardware

On the outside:

  • Replaced Tail Light Bulbs
  • Replaced Door Handle Gaskets
  • Replaced ///M Badges
  • Replaced Wheel Badges
  • Replaced Rear BMW Roundel

While I did a lot of work inside, out and underneath, I'd still consider this M Coupe a "driver". It cleans up very nicely and drives wonderfully, but it still has a few flaws I chose not to address:

  • The previous owner put 3 screws along the bottom of the driver door panel. Beige Z3M door panels are usually pretty easy to find, but I haven't come across one in otherwise better condition while I've had this coupe. You can't see the screws while in the car, so they haven't really bothered me. That door panel also has a hard time holding the door handle surround in place. It falls off every once in a while, and I have to slide it back on.
  • There are two spots on the roof behind the sunroof where the clearcoat is starting to fail. There's also one small spot on the hood that's way less noticeable but still there.
  • The passenger seat motors are not operational. The seat is all the way down and all the way back where I usually keep my passenger seat anyway. Removing the seat requires accessing bolts in the rear rails, so it will be difficult to remove and access for repair.
  • There's a decent scratch and a couple lighter scuffs on the passenger door. There's one more small but deep scratch on the panel just behind the passenger door.
  • The front bumper has some light scuffs.
  • The steering wheel is a little squeaky when it's cold. I'll try to address this in the next few days.
  • There are a couple small rock chips on the passenger side of the windshield
  • The wheels have some nicks and curbing. The worst one is the driver-side rear wheel which has a large paint chip. Everytime I've replaced or refinished wheels in the past, the new owner has immediately replaced them with aftermarket, so I decided to just sell it cheaper than I would have otherwise.
  • The front tires are usable, but do not have a lot of life left.

Overall it drives amazingly and looks great too if you don't look too close. It should be mechanically solid for a long time. The last two times I've driven it, people have followed me to my destination to check it out. All the important maintenance and upgrades you need at this mileage have been taken care of. I'd drive it anywhere, and if you live out of state I'd be willing to drive it to you (I haven't had a good coupe roadtrip yet this year).

It's not really fair to comment on my own listing. I will say that I wish I had better detail photos which I will try to post soon. This coupe will make someone an excellent driver, and I feel like I've priced it fairly aggressively given all the work done to it. The weather has been nice in Colorado the past few weeks, so I've been driving it a lot and really enjoying it. I mentioned in the listing that I've had it in some fun places, so I tried to include some of those photos at the end of the listing for history.
