My Comments

Sold 2/19/11 - Sold to the high bid of $12,701.

2/19/11 Update - This one has been seen in person. Here are his thoughts:

For 10 grand it is pretty cheap. But, not without issues. Mostly cosmetic.
Paint is fair to good, deep dent the size of a quarter about 2 inches behind the sunroof. Walnut.? Heavy walnut. No apparent subframe damage. There is a rock chip right in the center of the windshield. The switch panel under the radio needs some work. While all the electonics seemed to work, the switches were chipped scratched or broken. Drivers seat rocked slightly.

Some road rash on the rear roadstars, not terrible but rashed just the same.

The car runs good, but the most worrisome thing for me was the gearbox. The clutch did not slip, but the takeup was right at the floor and the shifter would not smoothly shift into gear, sometimes requiring a double clutch.

The owner called me back as he was driving off saying that it shifted fine for him, but he was mashing the clutch all the way into the carpet. I was not able to get a PPI due to timing of auction. I did talk to a parts guy at the Nashville dealer about my concerns. While the transmission would not be the same between the coupe and a standard z3, the user interface and general feel would be quite similar. Since I had thoughts about bidding on this car, I did find a 2002 z3 across town to drive for comparison purposes.
The z3 transmission was flawless and the clutch take up was about 1/3 off the floor. Without exstensive knowledge about coupes, I cannot say that the clutch/trasmission feel of this coupe meant that maintenance was inevitable.

Perhaps it is just a clutch ajustment but the guy said he has owned it for 6-8 months and I could not rationalize why someone would buy a car like this to sell it in 1/2 a year because he did not have the space in his driveway (while his ad said that he was selling for tax money) ?? Too many things were pointing me toward the next car.

2/19/11 Update - Broke the 5 figure barrier.

I'm always excited to see what a no reserve coupe will sell for. This one appears to be in nice condition for it's 107,000 miles. It does appear to be stock other than the replaced hood roundel. The interior is nice, but I wouldn't call it flawless. There does seem to be some noticeable wear on the driver's seat bolster. There seems to have been some recent maintenance performed on it, but there's no mention of cooling system replacement which is important around this mileage. It has an accident recorded in its history in September 2005, but it does have a clean title and appears to be repaired well. The price I posted is the current bid. I'll try to update it relatively frequently and adjust my value rating accordingly. I think getting this coupe for anything under $15k would probably be a decent deal.
